Definition of Orthodontics

A branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. The technical term for these problems is “malocclusion’, which means “bad bite”.

Scope of Orthodontics
The practice of orthodontics involves the design, application and control of corrective appliance (braces) to brig teeth, lips and jaws into proper alignment and achieve facial balance.


Periodontics

A branch if dentistry concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth.
The word “periodontal” literally means “around the tooth”. Periodontal diseases are bacterial infections that destroy the attachment fibers and supporting bone that holds the teeth in the mouth, left untreated, these diseases can lead to tooth loss. The main cause of periodontal disease is bacterial plaque, a sticky colorless film that constantly on teeth.


ORAL SURGERY

A specialty of dentistry that includes the diagnosis, surgical and related treatment of disease, injuries and defects involving both the functional and esthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the head, mouth, teeth, gums, jaws, and neck.

Scope of Periodontics
It involves, but is not limited to: wisdom teeth removal, apiocoectomy, TMU disorder, facial trauma, corrective jaw surgery, oral pathology, dental implants, anesthesia, and bone grafts.

Definition of Endodontics
It is a branch of dentistry concerned with the morphology, physiology and pathology of the human dental pulp and peri-radicular tissues.

Scope of Endodontics
It is a study and practice encompass the basic clinical sciences, including biology of the normal pulp, the etiology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases and injuries of the pulp associated peri-radicular conditions.


Pediatric Dentistry

A branch of dentistry devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of dental problems affecting children.

Scope of Pediatric Dentistry
Its study and practice includes training the child to accept dentistry, restoring and maintaining the primary, mixed, and permanent dentitions, applying preventive measures for dental carries and periodontal disease and preventing and preventing, intercepting, and correcting various problems of occlusion.

Definition of Prosthodontics
A branch of dentistry pertaining to the restoration and maintenance of oral function, comfort, appearance, and health of the patient by the replacement of missing teeth and contagious tissues with artificial substitutes. It has three main branches: removable prosthodontics, fixed prosthodontics, and naaxillafacial prosthetics.

Importance of Orthodontics
Since orthodontics is concerned with the treatment of “improper bites” a.k.a malocclusion which is a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both, orthodontics can focus on dental displacement, control and modification of facial growth. Orthodontics can be carried purely as for esthetic reasons with regards to improving the general appearance of the patients teeth.

Importance of Endodontics
The practice of endodontics is concerned primarily with the removal of the diseased pulp and its replacement with filling material, an operation known as root canal therapy. Preservation of the natural tooth in this manner serves both appearance and utility.

Methods of Treatment
Pulp is removed with sterile instrument, after the pulp is removed, the tooth continues to be nourished by connecting blood vessels in the jaw. Operations on the pulp are performed with the aid of local anesthetic.


Importance of Periodontics

Degeneration or inflammation of those tissues can be caused by various systems or local diseases or by poor oral hygiene. Systemic Diseases which are life threatening mainly manifest on the oral cavity first. So, proper diagnosis and recognition of a dentist is very useful. Tooth loss can result when periodontal disease is not treated.

Methods of Treatment

1. Supragingival and Subgingival scaling and probing
- removal of plaques and calcular deposits located under and above the gum area while measuring and checking if there pocket formations formed due to damage of the supporting tissues and bones structures surrounding the tooth.

2. Root planning and curettage
- a procedure that smoothes the root surfaces of the tooth by removing abnormal toxic tooth tissue supporting structures that is rough, contaminated, or permeated with calculus.

3. Splinting of periodontically compromised teeth.
- putting of wires or splints to teeth that are mobile due to damaged caused by bacterial infection to tooth tissue structures surrounding the tooth. This case is done after the procedures mentioned above, to stabilized back the tooth condition.
